Yes. I’m volunteering to become a human pet.
I’m the Real-Life Human Pet, and I’m putting an extraordinary idea to the test. I’m offering companionship, conversation, walks and shared experiences in exchange for accommodation, meals and medical cover.
It might sound outrageous. But behind the headline is something serious: a new way for people to share their homes and their lives.

The big question
What on Earth is a human pet?
A human pet is a person who moves in with a host and offers companionship (conversation, walks, games, music and outings) in exchange for a room, meals and medical cover. No leads, no kennels: just two adults who agree, in writing, how they’ll share a home. Think live-in companion with a sense of humour about the name.

Companionship, without the pet-care routine
Sharing life with a pet can be wonderful, but it also brings routines: regular walks, feeding, picking up poop, and arranging a pet-sitter when you travel.
That’s one practical difference here: I can feed and clean myself, exercise independently, and take responsibility for my own day-to-day care. I’m easier to bring along on holiday, and I can look after myself when my host is away on a business trip—no pet-sitter needed.

There are a lot of homes with an empty room and a quiet evening, and a lot of people who would love a place to belong. I’m volunteering to show that those two things can meet: openly, safely, and with a bit of fun.
So I’m doing it for real. I’m looking for my first host, putting everything in writing, starting with a trial period, and sharing the journey as it happens.
What I’m hoping to show

- That an unusual arrangement can be safe, respectful and fair.
- That sharing a home can be good for both people in it.
The serious bit

The Real-Life Human Pet is the first volunteer on Trusted Human Pets, a platform designed to connect people offering companionship with people offering homes.
